Tante took her first airplane ride from Grand Rapids to Florida when she was 90 years old. She was interviewed by the radio or television and asked if she was afraid of flying. Her reply was,"not at all, if something happens, I'll just be that closer to Heaven". She was also the champion Domino player at the Holland Home where she lived from age 80 to 102. When her eye-sight began to fail they reversed the color of the blocks which made it easier for her to identify the dots. | After arriving in Grand Rapids Roelof wrote a letter to his relatives in the Netherlands. This letter has been kept in the family and a translated version can be read here. |
| Roelof was the 6th child of 12 children born to his parents in the Netherlands. After he married and had 3 children he and his wife decided to migrate to America which they did in 1906. Roelof was a painter by profession and developed a good business here in America. He contracted lead poisioning and died at 52 ys. leaving several children for his widow to care for. He is said to have been a very friendly, jovial, and compassionate person. He loved to sing and was a devote Christian. He accepted everyone regardless of race, religion or means. At one time he took a Negroe family to Grandville Ave. CRC. which was quite unheard of but he did not care. He painted many of the mansions of Grand Rapids and was considered one of the best. He had a rather lingering dead and remained at home until his death in 1929 of perhaps Bright's Disease. His children all loved him dearly and always spoke most warmly of him. |
| Lammegien( Elizabeth) was an orphan at a very early age and had one brother. She was allegedley adopted by a family with whom she lived until her marriage. Her brother Arend Bosscher started a Rusk factory and did very well. He had several chidren who later took over the business and also did extremely well. Her brother paid the expenses for Elizabeth to return to the Netherlands for a visit in 1936. Daughter Emma accompanied her and they stayed there for a summer. Prior to this visit Elizabeth always missed Holland and thought it was the only place she was ever happy. However, upon her return to the States she decided that America was her home and stopped comparing it to "the ole' Country" She never learned to speak the English language very well and many of her grandchildren could not understand her very well so she did not develop close relationships with many of them. Her grandson Bob Haan, who stayed often at his grandmother's did learn to communicate with her and had a close relationship with her. A sister-in-law came for a visit from Holland, Tante Aftje and stayed for a year. This was Roelof's sister, older than Elizabeth but they had an enjoyable time together. When Elizabeth was on her death bed in Butterworth Hospital, she shared just before dying that she heard angels singing, and saw a very bright light. She had enjoyed relatively good health throughout her life but the last few years developed diabetes. It is also thought that she died of Cancer but this was never confirmed. |

| Aunt Nell was a very friendly, kind lady who in the years before her marriage gave "readings" of a romantic or humorous nature. She loved to sing and was well versed in the Bible. She and her husband John were killed in an auto accident at the corner of 44th and the East Beltline in Grand Rapids when they were on their way to the airport to meet their grandaughter(s). A young 18 year old lad ran the red light. It was a very sad time for all of the families. |
| John was born and raised on a farm in northern Michigan and his occupati on for the most part was factory work and truck driver. He worked hard f or his family of five children and times were difficult for them during t he Depression yrs. He had a very deep voice and was quite a talker. At t imes he could appear to be rather rough but he had a good sense of humo r. He and Nell took a trip to the Netherlands which was a wonderful ti me for both of them. |

Bob and Sue Feenstra were hospitalized in Buffalo for several weeks and returned to Gr. via ambulance and remained bed-ridden for some months at home. Jerry was driving the car and said the driver of the other car was at fault by going thru a red light. A year later the case went to trial and the case was settled outside of Court. Jerry and his wife first lived in Detroit, Mich, then Traverse City and Racine, Wisconsin. His wife suffered from servere depression at various times. She was an excellent mother to her six children and was deeply religious. Jerry had heart surgery in his later years. He was an avid golfer and very proud of his family. | Ardene was a very attractive lady with a beautiful voice and a flair for Chinese/Asian cuisine. She worked prior to her marriage in the administrative offices at Calvin College. She had many "suitors" and married Bob Howard, which turned out not to have been the best choice for her. They remained married however until her death. They had been missionaries in the Philippines which was a highlight in her life. The family moved to the Hawaian Islands where Bob Howard worked with an Insurance Co and Investments. Ardene never liked living there and left with the children while Bob remained. Bob returned to the States and they lived in East Rapids for several years. Bob made some serious mistakes in the investment business and was incarcerated for some wrong-doings which really devastated Ardene. Ardene had suffered from serious Depression for many years for which she had to be hospitalized at various times. She never really recovered from this illness and died by an overdose of medication. She was cremated and her ashes are in the santuary cript at Central Reformed chruch in Grand Rapids where she was a member. Ardene and her cousin Bob Haan were very close friends for many years. |

| Elizabeth was a "tom-boy" when a very young girl. She loved the outdoors and flowers. She was a superb baker and many of her recipes remain popular throughout the family. She was a very devoted wife and mother and her home was the center of her life which included her beautiful gardens. She raised prize African violets and had a very "green-thumb". Her Grandchildren were her pride and joy. She lived with her husband Enno and three children in five diferent homes. They include: Sheridan Ave , 644 Hogan St. Sw, 1728 Clyde Park Sw, 1141 Neland Ave. Se, 1455 Rossman SE, At age 83 she moved into Raybrook Manor where she lived until she died at age 90. The last year of her life involved some confusion and she died of heart failure. She had suffered high blood pressure most of her life but generally enjoyed good health. She continued to travel to Lake Worth, Florida following Enno's death and she usually went with her very close companion, Ann Van Klieft who was also a widow. Liz learned how to drive at age 60 and was an excellent driver. She also learned how to managed all her stocks and bonds and increased them substanially. She prided her independence and although had opportunities to remarry, preferred the single life. The only work she did outside of her home was prior to her marriage which involved addressagraphing. She was always a very good student, graduated from the eight grade at South High school in Gr. She was extremely well read and studied Enno's textbooks along with him while he was in College. She was able to keep up with her husband's peers and they socialized primarily with highly educated friends. Liz would make dozens of stripes of BANKET at Xmas time for friends and family. Liz died on the same date, June 23rd as did her mother for whom she was named. |

| Enno Ralph Haan, father of Eunice, Robert and Elaine married Elizabeth Ruiter in her family home at 636 Olympia St. SW. The couple were madly in love. They lived just opposite each other as Enno was living at the time at John and Cora Hekman's home on Grandville Ave. Aunt Cora was Enno's aunt and he was attending high school at the time. Enno was born on Grandville Ave. above his parents grocery store. As his family grew larger, he spent much of his very early years at his grandmother Haans' home living with his two unmarried aunts, Minnie and Cora. Cora's sister Ricky was John Hekmans first wife who died in child birth for her daughter Freda. John married Cora who helped raise her nephew Edward and neice Freda. Enno's father Chris decided to move his family to Sully,Iowa where he set up another grocery-meat market. Enno hated Iowa and his mother encouraged him to return to Gr, get his high schooling and College degrees which he very much wanted to do. He met Liz, fell in love and they decided to marry because Liz was 3 months pregnant. Liz felt so terrible she wanted to die and was found on the banks of Grand River by her father before she went into the water. Her father reassured her of their love and understanding and the wedding was arranged. Enno went to Calvin College, Eunice was born, they first lived on Sheridan Ave. just off from Hall St. Enno was an all A student in high school and college. He taught at Calvin for a year in the History Dept. which was his major. He then accepted a position at the Pine Christian school on the West side of GR. He had to give up teaching during the Depression years as the pay was only $6 a week and he had 3 children at that time to provide for. Enno went into the Insurance business which he did well but never liked. He then was offered a position with Curtiss 1000 Envelope Co. as the main sales Rep. in the State of Michigan. He enjoyed this work immensely and financially very well. He held this position until his untimely death at age 59. Enno loved to read and was a history scholar. He enjoyed going to Florida every winter with his best friend since boyhood, Arie De Borst. He was a gentle man, a strong leader in the church having served as the clerk/sec'y on several occasions. He was very fond of his grandchildren and proud of his son Bob who obtained a Mater's Degree in Social Work from the U of Mich. Enno died suddenly on the sidewalk in front of St. Mary's hospital in Gr. around 2:30 pm. He is buried at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with his wife Liz. who died at age 90, in 1993. |

| Louis was the youngest of this family and lost his father at a very young age. His siblings and his mother doted on him and he became rather undisciplined throughout most of his life. He was very likeable, showed everyone a good time and was crazy about the ladies. He died of lung cancer in the VA hospital in Battle Creek, Mich. He had a very close lady friend to the very end. His first wife Marge Diepenhorst and he were married very young and their son Bobby was born within 6 months. The couple divorced, Louis remarried to Evelyn Carpenter who died of cancer in 1966. Louis was a patient at Pinerest and at that time met Kay Vander Woude who became pregnant and they married. They had two daughters. The marriage ended in divorce and Louis never remarried. Kay moved with her two girls to Canada and then later to the State of Washington. Her daughters moved and married in Oregon. Louis and Marge lived in Howard City, Mich. and Lou lived also in Pierson, Mich. for a time. They were members at one time of the Howard City Immanuel Lutheran Church and later met a Rev. Bob Jackson of the Baptist Church. They were both re-Baptized in Sand Lake and made a rather temporary change in their life-style. It was shortly after this time that Marge ran off with another man and moved to California. Louis deserted Bobby who was found on the doorsteps at Grandma Ruiter's with a small suitcase and crying. He lived with them for at least a year if not more. Attendants for Lou and Evy's marriage were: Rose and Carl Grimill. |

The family lived on Griggs St. SW. Grand Rapids. They were all at one time members of Grandville Ave. CRC. The family were formerly members of Central CRC in Holland Michigan. Bob had a difficult childhood and adult life. He was often neglected by his parents and spent sometime living with Grandmother Ruiter. Aunt Emma helped him with his studies and also paid for his Christian education I believe. Later Bob spent some time in a Florida prison during which time Bob Haan kept in contact with him. However, the last time Bob was seen by relatives was when his father died in 1975. Bob Haan received a telephone call from Laura informing him of Bob's death but she either did not know the details or preferred not to share much information. Bob's mother Marge had remarried and moved to California. She had visited here in Grand Rapids some time before Louis's death. She telephoned Bob Haan at that time and told him she had been "reborn", had some heart problems but had had a nice time with Louis and son Bob during her visit. When Bob was last here, he was accompanied by a woman and her son of about Bob's age. They were present at the reception held following the funeral which was held at Jay & Irene Venema's home. These people were very evasive about the irrelationship with Bob but some of us thought they were appointed guardians and Bob was released from prison to attend his father's funeral. |
| Bob's wife Sharon divorced him in 1964. They have a son Robert and two daughters, Sherrie and Terri. Sherri lives in Texas and Terri lives in Alabama. The sister of Marge Dienpenhorst, Laura died 1995 and had re-married to a Wm. Renkema. Her son Rodger died in So. Carolina when he and his wife were visiting Bob in 1981. Earl Thomas and Milly, ages 90 and 86 respectively are living at the Michigan Christian Rest Home on the corner of Boston and Plymouth in Grand Rapids. Ernie Jenkins died in 1971. It is also thought that their mother Alice Diepenhorst re-married and moved to Holland, Mich. after the death of Arie Diepenhorst. Alice was a Berghorst before her marriage to Arie. Bob had 2 cousins, Rodger Jenkins, and Shirley Jenkins who married an Edward Smith and they lived in Wayland, Mich. Bob died in Florence, So. Carolina in Sept. 1986. His Soc. Sec .# is: 375-36-0840 His address in Florence was: 29501 Florence, Florence, South Carolina. Bob died of a lingering illness, Cirrosis of the Liver. He met his friend Corbin in prison. the two had established a business, namely, a Convenience Store. Son Robbie lived with his father for about 1 year but living with Corbin was reported to be a very "strange" experience. Bob visited his daughter Terri one year before his death and she reports that he knew he was dying at that time. Terri and Sherri attended Bob's funeral in Florence, So. Carolina and said Bob is buried in a small cemetery in Florence near a railroad track. Terri was voted Teacher of the Year recently as reported by her mother Sharon. |
| Her son Bobby is in College studying Industrial Engineering. Son Dustin, age 16 is in high school and both boys are doing very well. Bob never had any children by any other woman. Sharon and Bob did have twin baby boys born to them between Robbie and Sherri but they both died shortly after birth and are buried in a cemetery in Grandville, Michigan where they are identified as twin A and Twin B only. The burial plot is said to have been purchased by Bob and Sharon. Sherri has recently divorced her 5th husband. |
| Sharon divorced Bob Ruiter in 1965 and married Arnold F. Pagel in Kent County. |
